When I was little girl someone gave me a kit to embroider a small square on canvas, this was my first embroidery. I had not made another needlepoint until a year ago when I tried again.
Needlepoint is made using thick cotton yarn or special wools woven on cavas, a fabric with a sparse weave. It is also possible to use plastic canvas, though it is most used in USA. The materials depend on what we want to make: a tapestry, a carpet, a bag…
The embroidery stitches mainly used are half cross stitch, petit point and Florentine stitch.
First two are used for making figures, whereas Florentine stitch is used for making abstract drawings. As for the canvases, they can be made with one or two threads and their weave can be more or less thick (it is measured by the holes in every 3.15’’). It is better to work using a stretcher because the canvas tends to deform.
Where can you find inspiration? On the Internet there are many patterns, both free and for sale. It is a question of what you like. I prefer modern style, the abstract patterns and the geometric ones.
