Escuela de Patchwork: cortar las piezas / Patchwork School: cutting the pieces

 

Una vez diseñado el top del quilt comenzamos su confección y lo primero es cortar las piezas que lo componen.

 

 

 

Necesitamos una alfombrilla de corte y una regla, que es conveniente que sea de patchwork. Son trasparentes y muestran todas las medidas que abarca su tamaño, en centímetros o pulgadas, además de diferentes ángulos. Para mi las básicas son la cuadrada y la rectangular, pero a partir de ahí se pueden ir adquiriendo triangulares, semicirculares, curvas, etc.

 

You need a cutting mat and a ruler for patchwork They are transparent and show all the measures it size covers, in centimetres or inches, apart from different angles. For me, the squared and the rectangular are basic, but from there you can acquire triangular, semicircular, curved, etc.

 

Tenemos que cortar las piezas con margen de costura, que variará según su forma. Una vez colocada la regla a la medida  y en la forma deseada, se sujeta con firmeza y se corta pasando el cúter pegado al borde la regla.

 

You may cut the pieces adding seam allowance, that will change according to its shape. Once placed the rule to the desired measure and shape, hold it firmly and cut pushing the cutter along the edge the ruler.

Se emplean para cortar piezas pequeñas o de forma irregular. Es muy importante tener unas tijeras exclusivamente para cortar la tela, que no usaremos para papel, la guata, el plástico de las plantillas y cualquier otra cosa.

 

 

Para cortar con tijeras podemos dibujar la pieza en el revés de la tela o usar una plantilla y cortaremos alrededor dejando aproximadamente 0,5 cm. de margen si se trata de partes de un bloque y 1 cm. si son aplicaciones.

 

To cut with scissors mark the outline of the shape on the wrong side of the fabric or pin the pattern to the fabric and cut around it, adding 0.2» seam allowance for pieces of a block and 0.4» seam allowance for appliqués.

 

Podemos adquirir una gran variedad de plantillas, pero también podemos hacerlas nosotros mismos, de cartón o plástico. Según nuestra experiencia y preferencia, las utilizaremos con o sin margen de costura, salvo las de paper piecing, que nunca llevan margen de costura. Si tienen margen de costura dibujamos en la misma plantilla el tamaño real de la pieza y con una chincheta hacemos un agujero en cada ángulo lo suficientemente grande para que luego podamos marcar el punto con un lápiz en la tela.

 

You can acquire a wide range of templates, but you  also can make them ourselves, of cardboard or plastic. In our experience and preference, we will use them with or without seam allowance, except for hand piecing templates, wich we always use without seam allowance. If you add seam allowance, using a pushpin, make a hole in the template at each corner. The hole must be large enough for the point of a pencil to mark thorugh.
