A few months ago I told you about new needlecraft magazines which have recently appeared. At the same time a younger public has become fan of knit, sewing, embroidery, patchwork.. What was once about “mothers and grandmothers”, and so, traditional magazines were focused on them. But, this magazines have had to choose between adapt or die. And the change has surprised me pleasantly.
I was suscribed for a year to Labores del Hogar. I did not renew the subscription because I still had lots of projects to do from the issues I bought. I occasionally buy it and I bought September’s issue because it had a supplement of Lanas Stop and a special of Ideas with Beads. The fact is that I love their editorial change. They have modernized the projects and the magazine format.
I also wanted to subscribe to a sewing magazine for The Crafty Room, my workshops school. It has been a very difficult decision because Burda is the reference, with no competition at technical level, but I Ilike Patrones because it has very modern models and also because I learned to sew with it. The truth is that both magazines annual subscription has a great price and I think they are complementary, so I had no option: I have subscribed to both.
As for patchwork, though I have bought different magazines in Spanish, I like so much Quilting Arts and Modern Patchwork that by the moment I will keep them. Why? So because they keep you up to date, that is to say, they not only include projects, but they teach new techniques and inform about all the news: books, other magazines, fabric collections, products and tools, meetings, exhibitions… And this is mainly because in USA patchwork has a completely different domension in the USA than in other countries.
And finally, as for knit and crochet I find it very hard to choose. Usually I buy online magazines depending on the included patterns. But, on the advice of a friend, I bought this summer Katia Casual and I liked it very much. The patterns are very well explained.
